“Start Here” by Alex and Brett Harris with Elisa Stanford

With their first book, “Do Hard Things,” the Harris brothers stated that teens can, (pretty obviously,) do hard things. God doesn’t call us to laze around on our backsides, he calls us to stand up for Him! Teenhood isn’t a pass to be lazy, it’s an opportunity to show Jesus to all those around us.

But where to start? How about right where you are?

That’s right. Here. You don’t have to move to Africa to be an agent of God. (Although, I am in no way dissing African mission-workers. They are  Uber-cool. But my point still stands. :-D) You can reach out to people in your school, or kids at the skate park, or the guy at youth group who doesn’t have any friends.

Start Here gives advice on how to find your passion, what to do about rejection, and how to handle success; uplifting stories and practical input on how to answer God’s call. We do not have the strength to do what God calls us to do, but it is given to us when we listen. Start Here is a guide on how to not only do that, but to act upon what we hear.

Alex and Brett also have a knack for speaking to their readers. What I mean by this is that it felt more like they were sitting and talking to me than it felt like I were reading directions out of a book. This feeling was even more pronounced as they were answering several of the questions that I’ve asked myself in the past. How hard should a “Hard Thing” be? Am I doing enough?

My personal response to the book was mainly to spend more time with God in the morning. As I have come to realize, living with 4 brothers can be pretty hectic, and I need God to reign over my day. My morning prayers give me time with him that I need when things get crazy.

For me, the book didn’t leave a lot of questions unanswered. The Harris brothers did a good job picking out the important stuff, and left me with a feeling of satisfaction.

I have read one more Harris book, but it has only made me hungrier for the next!

“Do Hard Things” by Alex and Brett Harris

Do Hard Things. A GREAT book. This really put into perspective what God expects of me (vs. what others expect of me) as a teen. Basically, the message of this book is that, in the seven years of teen-hood that we have, we don’t get a vacation from responsibility. The teen generation is generally looked down upon. People think, ‘Teens are to small/too young/incapable/etc. etc.’ But we aren’t! We can act up for God, and make ourselves known for loving God and following his commands. This book is by teens, for teens, and I do mean for teens. I think that every teen, Christian or not, should read these inspiring truths, and check out Alex’s and Brett’s blog, http://www.therebelution.com/blog/ Definitely worth it.
